Sony HDR-TD10 Review

Sony has done it again.  The Sony HDR-TD10 is the first camcorder that is full high definition and 3D.  Another first for Sony is the fact that the all new HDR-TD10 is the first 3D camcorder made for consumers that not only allows full 3D recording but will also provide a 3.5 inch LCD display with 3D playback.  Also, you have the option to play your movies back in either 3D or 2D mode at the click of a button. Your new 3D camcorder will also record in either mode, depending on your mood and setting.

The 3D high definition sensors are 1920×1080/50 x 2 – this provides true HD in 1080/50 interlaced or progressive. This is the best resolution possible for this offering and the difference can really be seen on the screen. The incredible detail in image resolution is truly something that must be witnessed to appreciate it. What we are talking about here is FULL high definition 3D content from 2 different sensors. This means, 2 lenses, 2 processors and 2 independent imagers. When you are ready to view the video, it is transferred to your 3D HDTV for a full high definition signal for each eye.  The result to the viewer is a true full high definition 3D picture.

What’s Different about Sony’s HDR-TD10 from other 3D Capable Recorders?

Other brands of camcorders achieve a 3D affect by splitting a 1920 x 1080 signal into two 960 x 540 channels in order to squeeze them onto one sensor.  However, that wasn’t good enough for Sony.  The Sony HDR-TD10 utilizes two HD sensors which equates to full 1920 x 1080 lines of resolution on both channels.  The resulting experience is a richer and more vivid 3D recording and playback.

The TD10 price is just a bit higher than Panasonic’s high-end 3D capable camcorder.  However, since you are getting true 3D capability, it’s hard to challenge the incredible value you are getting for the price.

Ergonomics – HDR-TD10’s Look and Feel

At first glance, the HDR-TD10 looks similar to the packaging of any other camcorder.  However, the camcorder is wider and almost feels a bit awkward when you hold it.  In order to support the 2D/3D capabilities, Sony incorporated dual sensors making the camcorder a bit wider than a typical HD camcorder.  The first time you handle the TD10, it does feel a bit oversized.  However, you quickly adapt to the grip since Sony’s designers are so great at keeping their cameras formfitting.  The control arrangements are at your fingertips as usual, and because the camera only weighs a pound, it is easy to forget you are holding it.

One other worthwhile benefit to point out is that the HDR-TD10 can record your videos in 3D, but if you are visiting someone who doesn’t have a 3D compatible HDTV or PC, it’s no problem; everything shot in 3D can also be played back in 2D.  Even a more powerful point is that you can watch 3D-ready LCD directly on the camcorder’s LCD and you don’t have to use special glasses to appreciate the 3D effects.

Picture Quality

Because the HDR-TD10 provides you with dual sensors, you experience twice as much picture quality as before. The 3D full HD experience offers state-of-the-art recording technology that produces pictures which are highly detailed and all encompassing. Sony has added the Wide G lens technology as well as optical Steady Shot that can compensate for any hand or arm movements that occur when recording your 3D movies. Steady Shot ensures your picture quality is clear and sharp for movie playback, just in case you have a somewhat, shaky hand.

The HDR-TD10 provides 7.1 megapixel still image capture, but it is available in 2D mode only. The optical zoom capabilities are the best so far at 10 x (3D-mode) / 12 x (2D-mode). The 3D LCD touch panel offers the TruBlack technology. This provides an excellent picture contrast regardless of what type of lighting in which you are recording in. You also get Sony’s Exmor-R CMOS sensors for your low light recording needs. “Frame Packaging” is new to the Sony 3D camcorder and is the workhorse behind producing high quality image playback that providing you with that authentic 3D experience.

Sound Quality

The sound quality is simply exhilarating with the built in stereo playback system. You will hear clear, crisp sounds that are very real and pleasing. When recording your movies for the big screen or your high-def television, you will be impressed with the full HD 5.1 Surround Sound playback. Sony understands sound like no other manufacturer and with the HDR-TD10 it is very important to experience a full HD 3D movie that included excellent sound. Sony recognized that you want to have “3D life-like” quality sound to match your video and you will not be disappointed.  The HDR-TD10 includes audio-video connectivity to you HDTV using the mini HDMI output connection.
