The PJ Stands for Projector

This is a very powerful full-featured camcorder that also sports a mobile projection system. Yes, you heard me correctly, not only can you have all the fun in the world recording your videos, but you can set your camcorder down, point it at a flat surface, turn on a switch, and watch your movies right where you are. The technology is so advanced that the projection image is not only high-contrast, but you can adjust your screen up to 60″inches (diagonally) for your viewing pleasure.

Comparing the Sony HDR-PJ30V to the Mid-Range HDR-PJ50V

You may be looking at the HDR-PJ30V and saying to yourself, “I’ve seen that unit before;” and this is very likely, but you may have been looking at the closely related HDR-PJ50V. These two units are almost identical in design and features. They both share the 1920×1080 Full HD 60p/24p recording feature as well as the built-in projection system, the wide angle G lens for enhanced detailed images, and the 17x extended zoom that works in conjunction with the 12x optical zoom. What makes these two different is the PJ30 offers 32GB of flash memory for storage and the PJ50 camcorder provides a whopping 220GB of storage.

Ergonomics

Sony has never had a problem when it comes to an ergonomically designed camcorder. Their design philosophy is to keep it simple and use what works for the photographer. You can see that in the HDR-PJ30. The shape and form of this camcorder makes the sleek design and styling look perfect, but it feels even better. When you handle this camcorder, you can’t help but notice the light weight as well as how the camera fits in the palm of your hand. With the easy adjustable hand-strap, the camera can be adjusted to fit anyone. The buttons and adjusters are all at your fingertips. These are just a few reasons why this unit requires a second look.

Images are easily viewed with the 3.0 inch LCD viewer indoors and outdoors. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to record using an LCD screen outdoors and you can’t clearly see what you are recording. For those of you frustrated by poor viewing quality when outdoors, then you’ll really appreciate the Clear Photo LCD Plus feature. It’s easy to create an outdoor video because you can clearly see vivid images on the LCD screen.

Another new innovation from Sony sought after by those who must document the location of their photos or recordings, is Sony’s built-in GPS receiver which is great for tracking exactly where you took that recording of your saltwater fishing trophy.

Picture Quality

The HDR-PJ30 from Sony is a feature-packed, full HD, camcorder and projection unit that is all built into one device. The HDR-PJ30 offers a full high definition recording experience, with ample Flash memory for storage, a built in high-contrast projector system, the wide-angle G lens system, a 3 inch LCD touch screen for viewing, SteadyShot image stabilization, wind and noise reduction for clear voice recording; and these are only a few items that are onboard this incredible unit. If you’ve been on the hunt for a camcorder that can satisfy your HD recording needs, you found it and more with the PJ30 from Sony.

When using the HDR-PJ30 recording at 60p the image clarity is phenomenal when viewed on your HDTV. However, if you want to step it up a notch to achieve a truly film-like quality look to your video, then the 24p recording is also available.

The picture quality is altogether astonishing, and the HDR-PJ30 makes it all possible with everything that is built inside. The full HD 1080/60p/24p resolution does allow you to record in full HD for better detail and excellent quality videos, but it doesn’t stop there. The stunning picture quality is also created when you use the wide angle G lens for great group shots. The camera’s still image capture at 7 megapixels, while not on really on par with the higher end models will put many still-shot cameras to shame. You also get the Intelligent Auto feature. This mode analyzes your movie and picks the perfect movie mode to use when recording.

While not as generous as the higher-end HDR-PJ50, the 32GB of internal flash memory still allows you to record nearly 13 hours of high quality footage. You also have the option of using the additional SD memory cards should you need more that 13 hours of storage.

Sound Quality

Sound quality is very important and Sony has left nothing out in this area. When recording your videos, you can instantly play them back using the Playback feature right on your camcorder. This allows you to hear your recordings right on the camcorder in full stereo. This also enhances your viewing pleasure when using your camcorder as a projection unit.

Pros

• 13 hours of recording time means you won’t have to switch over to SD memory cards as much as you will using the PJ10
• Recording and projection capable system all in one camcorder
• Tag your photo locations using the built-in GPS receiver

Cons

• The HDMI cable needed to connect and playback a video on your HDTV is sold separately

Professional Quality Video with Perks

The HDR-PJ30V provides most everything needed in a mid-range camcorder, and then adds a little more. Sony’s decision to add a projection system to their camcorder line doesn’t affect performance or quality in recordings. Yet, the new feature has added an experience unlike any other camcorders in its class. For video photographers who can benefit from having the ability to provide immediate feedback to their viewing audience, you’re going to love Sony’s HDR-PJ30V.
