Sony HDR-CX130
Sony unveiled its first ultra-compact camcorder for 2011. The Sony HDR-CX130 is oozing with style and comes in 3 colors, blue, silver and your traditional black. The HDR-CX130 is welcoming the year with a few improvements from her predecessor, the HDR-CX150. This entry-level Sony HDR–CX130 handy camera now features a 30x zoom, up from 25x, built-in USB connectors, optical image stabilization, and 60p recording.
Sony also unveiled a new tracking focus feature that will soon be a standard feature on all their HD models. The feature is similar to the AF/AE tracking option found on Panasonic camcorders as well as select Vixia models on Canons in 2010.

Sony HDR-CX130
Features
The Sony HDR-CX130 has a 3” screen which is bigger than most standard ultra-compact models. This means that you can see what you are recording quite clearly and also access some of the recording controls from your screen.
The HDR-CX130 has a patented Clear Photo LCD Plus™ which displays a 230K pixel resolution. This beautiful screen allows you to tilt it 270 degrees for you to record at different heights in your hand or on a tripod. You could also share the moments with a bunch of people all at one time or for you to tilt away from glare. The ability to have the screen tilt is a definite plus for its ultra-compact size.
Seeing a big number for pixel resolution may not mean too much if it’s accompanied by inaccurate color. Think of this like picking a good piece of diamond, all the ‘Cs’ must match up. Of course, Sony knows this very well and pairs accurate, life-like color to it.
Zoom
The Sony HDR-CX130 renders exceptional zoom quality. The zoom balance button sits on the top of the camera which is convenient if you want to hold your camera lower than eye-level. Its optical and digital zoom works together to give you 42x extended zoom to get you closer to your focal point.
Flash Memory
This ultra-compact Handycam uses flash memory. With this format you will be able to search easily for random pictures and video segments. You will not have to worry about its fragility as this is the most durable recording format. This means that you didn’t pay more for built-in internal memory. Plus, you may either do a direct copy to an external HDD without using the PC or use.
The Video Camera
The Sony HDR-CX130 is really small and light for you to take along anywhere without hassle. Its almost like a jet-set-ready-to-go Handycam. You can almost wrap your whole (large) hand around it when it’s held the ‘traditional’ manner.
It has a wide-angled lens that captures and produces accurate color and brilliance in the high definition mode. The HDR-CX130 has high definition resolution that allows you to record in Full High Definition quality, 1920 x 1080 and 1080/60p. You can immediately run a playback via HDMI on your HDTV.
Remember how you or your girlfriends sometimes do a ‘quality-check’ on your newly taken still pictures? Well, Sony’s anticipated and listened and created an ‘Event Browse groups photos/videos just like that for your easy reference instead of having to rewind and replay. To put the cherry on this cake, Sony’s created a ‘Highlight Playback’ for you to make movies with transitions.
The Optical Steady Shot™ image stabilization w/ Active Mode is a feature that you will be quite amazed by. You won’t have to worry too tough about being on a boat on choppy waters or the like (the ‘Blair-Witch’ effect).
So if you need to be filming your friend water skiing, the HDR-CX130 has a Tracking Focus with a Face Detection which will really help if you want to catch the ‘live action’ instead of looking into the screen continuously. This means that your friend you are filming will always be in focus even you move out of frame. This stylish HDR-CX130 comes with a Golf Shot feature that grants you the option of filming in slow motion as well.
Looks like everything comes in handy doesn’t it? The Sony HDR-CX130 now has a Wind noise reduction for clear voice recording. This was absent in the previous model.
When you are filming in a low-light environment, the HDR-CX130 has a back-illuminated “Exmor R” CMOS sensor works well. There is an external LED light to assist you otherwise. You can access menus and controls from the very intuitive touch-screen. Otherwise you also have the option of activate the Intelligent Auto which helps to pick 1 out of the 90 different scene combinations that are available.
Conclusion
Style has always been part of Sony’s line-up. The HDR-CX130 is a no-exception. This entry-level eye-candy from Sony is very compact and easy to use. It is one Handycam you might want to carry around all the time because it looks so good. The idea of not having internal memory and carrying extra flash cards could be a deal-breaker for some. But if privacy is somewhat important to you, storing your flash memory separately could genuinely make up for it.
The features are well-rounded but may lack many advanced controls that you see on the higher-end models. Advance controls may confuse some. Available controls are easy to use and the performance is competitive with other ultra-compact models in its class. The Sony HDR-CX130 is a great pick for its ease of use, attractive features, size, mobility and let’s not forget its good looks.
