Design

We have said before, and we will say it again. If you take the branding logos off camcorder equipment you can normally still have a good guess who made it, as all the leading players seem to have fallen nicely into their own personal styling preferences, and JVC is no different. On first glance without a shadow of a doubt you are looking at a JVC piece of kit. The JVC Everio GZ-MG670 has the solid square lines, with the color and silver finish. We had the black one and it does look good. The jury is out on the shape. Some of us liked it, others thought it was too angular, but we all agreed it sits well in the hand, and one-handed operation is not a problem. Again, we pick them up on their hand strap. It really is a bit feeble compared to others we have seen and left us a little unsure that it really would hold, but the button layout and menu is spot on if a little long winded!

Actual user review:
“The recorder is very small, has good optics, and is easy to use. The total record time is fantastic. The laser menu is also easy to manipulate. The software supplied for downloading to a PC is easy to use and mostly self-explanatory. The negatives thus far are that it has an auto shutoff feature after 5 minutes making the camera useless for recording long-term slow acting events. I have found no way to shut off this “feature”. The manual supplied with the recorder is very limited. I have not figured out how to use a PC to directly record a DVD from the recorder. Also, I have not yet found a way to pause the camera while recording and later resume recording using the same file. If recording is stopped, then a new file is begun when it is started again. There is no eyepiece so in bright outdoor light, it is hard to view what is being recorded.” – D.Pippen (USA)

Functionality

This is one of the best in the price band for color accuracy. Even we have to say when we tested it in bad light conditions, such as you might find at wedding parties and the like. The JVC Everio GZ-MG670 offers a very good 80GB internal storage which equates to about 20 hours of recording time if you stay on the top quality of recording, and instant playback so you can check what you have recorded is also instant, meaning you can assess and discard any rubbish at the touch of a button. We didn’t find a huge amount to gripe about with the JVC Everio GZ-MG670. They have replaced some of the controls with their Laser Touch operation, which again to be honest is a love it or cannot stand it completely hate it feature. It does work but you do have to be accurate with your touch, which some people may find too frustrating.

Conclusion

This is a good mid range camcorder for the money. The box is full of the normal extras and you will need them. You get the leads, remote control, utilities disc, charger, battery pack and manuals. We enjoyed testing the JVC Everio GZ-MG670 and we would spend our money on this camcorder. It really is a good unit and performs well in its class, so we can see why camcorderinfo.com rated it so highly.

Average User Rating:

  • “I’ve had this camera for a about a week now, so far it’s exceeded my expectations. Here was few points of criteria for me. Good lens, provides good zoom range, plus some sort of stabilization, would have preferred optical stabilization though. Low lux, this camcorder had better than average standard def video against camcorders at the same price point. Most HD camcorders at this price point performed very poorly. HDMI output – what’s not to love about being able to use 1 cable to hook up to the tv? If you’ve gotten this far, and done a little research on this camera, then you’ve read the complaints about movie file format. Well, they work fine in windows 7, plays them fine, right off the camcorder with windows media player, and can be edited by windows movie maker, only issue with it, is that is doesn’t read time & date stamps that are associated with each .mod file.” -D.Repenhoff (USA)
  • “Love this camcorder!! Took this on my wedding cruise and the videos are great and the zoom is unbelievable!!! Battery life was very good also, although I did take a spare battery with me but I never used it. It is very easy to use and not hard at all to figure out all of the functions.” – C.Edmonds (PA,USA)
