JVC GZ-HD320

Digital camcorders coming from the different manufacturers are not only getting more competitive by incorporating all these new technologies and features, but they are also becoming smaller in size to make them better travel companions and to simplify the learning curve for first-time users. At least that is what JVC is doing with their Everio series. Those that want lots of space to store long hours of video should lean on a digital camcorder with an internal hard disk like the JVC Everio GZ-HD320.

Design

The overall look of the JVC Everio GZ-HD320 just shows JVC’s effort in shrinking their products. In fact, the HD320 is 30% smaller than the previous model introduced last year, yet the glowing HD logo reveals that the full HD specs are there and the presence of the Konica Minolta lens shows its high zooming capabilities.

Opening the 2.7-inch LCD display reveals the main part of the interface presenting several buttons below the display that are related to the new Laser Touch Operation for zooming and recording in an easier fashion. The other side that is revealed by the display show more buttons that are typical in camcorders. The buttons that stand out are the three buttons grouped together to serve as the different ways in transferring the video.

The hand strip on the opposite end is thin which can be uncomfortable for some people, but fortunately, it can be adjusted for it to serve as a more comfortable wrist strap. Some controls are also found on the top which lies the shutter button for photo shooting mode and the zoom control. Additional memory can be added by inserting a microSD card in the slot below just next to the tripod mount.

Main Features

The amazing thing about this rather small digital camcorder is its high hard disk capacity allowing 120 GB of full HD video data to be stored. That is equivalent to up to 50 hours of full HD footage and that isn’t counting the possible use of a microSD card.

The video quality and performance is decent for its small size allowing the high definition video to be recorded in the maximum 1080p setting. Colors turn out to be very accurate during bright light conditions despite the lack of color control options. Only close-up levels show signs of artifacts, but the noise levels remain average for its category. The secrets behind the good color quality lies within the HD Gigabrid Premium video engine which not only processes optimal image quality, but it also does the process faster even if the option involves creating DVD discs. The GENESSA processing technology which was first seen on JVC’s line-up of HDTVs also helps in keeping the natural video free from motion judder and making sure the fine details are present even when the zooming controls on the lens are utilized. Finally, the HDMI 1.3 and x.v.Color play a role in keeping the colors accurate and vivid.

Other Features

Once all of the footage is recorded, lots of different options can be done on the stored videos. First they can be played back using a feature called Digest Playback which uses its own algorithm to pick highlight segments for playback in a “trailer” style. By using the Export, Upload, and Direct DVD buttons, videos can be transferred directly to iTunes using a USB cable or directly to a DVD by utilizing the computer’s burner. If connected to the internet, the video can also be uploaded to YouTube.

The Everio MediaBrowser software makes it possible to perform these operations when plugged using a USB connection. In addition, basic edit functions can be applied or video previews can be played back. With an HDMI cable, the camcorder can be hooked up to an HDTV or media source for easy playback to enjoy the color accuracies that the HD320 brings.

Bottom Line

The JVC Everio GZ-HD320 is a great high capacity digital camcorder to own that is lightweight and small in size. It also doubles as a basic still image camera as well where photos can be taken while recording although some photos may need sharpening. The most important thing about this camera is its ease of use and the GZ-HD320 successfully does that by offering easy options to transfer videos to all kinds of destinations.
