Flip UltraHD
One of the easiest camcorders to use on the market today is the Flip UltraHD with 120-minutes of record time. This model is part of the family of Flip camcorders. This is the perfect camcorder to take on family trips or class productions, because with an additional sixty minutes you won’t miss a minute. They have made this recorder the ideal size to transport in your pants pocket or purse. It is a little thicker than the newest member of the Flip camcorders, but still very portable. For people that want to share their videos with the world or just family and friends the Flip UltraHD is great.

Let’s look at some of the features that have made this camcorder line so popular. Besides being the perfect size it also begins to record within three seconds of powering up. The camcorder is easy to use because it has a single touch recording button, so you aren’t fiddling around trying to get the camcorder going only to miss the moment. These camcorders have 8 GB of built in memory so that you can record 120 minutes without needing any additional memory. You have several options for recharging the Flip Ultra HD. It uses two standard AA batteries, you can use a power adaptor or the Flip comes with a rechargeable AA battery pack that connects with a USB.
A 2x digital zoom gives ideal results in low light conditions or bright lighting. There is a two inch anti glare screen display for deleting videos or to just play back. Once you get to your PC or Mac the flip out USB arm will connect directly to your computer. There is FlipShare software pre loaded so that it can be downloaded and you can view the video quickly. It is also because of this software that you can upload to YouTube, MySpace, Facebook and emails. Clips can be edited; movies can be made that include sound and titles. You will also have the capability to take still images.
Actual user review:
“The Flip UltraHD does exactly what it says on the box, but absolutely nothing more. The video quality is fantastic for such a little camera, but it really suffers from the lack of image stabilization. Try as you might, human hands are simply not very steady, and all that tiny, tiny movement really becomes apparent in 720p. For on-the-fly recording, it’s better than most alternatives. It’s very bulky when compared to the Flip MinoHD, but benefits from having real buttons (as opposed to the Mino’s touchscreen buttons). And of course it has twice the recording time and an HDMI output, so it requires a bigger form factor (about the same size as my HTC Touch Pro [or HTC Vuze, if you're on AT&T] phone, but about 2mm thicker). The audio was surprisingly good for such a tiny onboard microphone. I haven’t filmed outdoors yet, so I don’t yet know how good it does at filtering out ambient noise/wind. The built-in controls are limited to the basics: Record, stop, play, delete, zoom. When plugged into a PC the UltraHD shows up as a storage device, and the videos are accessible from the file explorer. The Flip software installer is on the UlraHD drive, and no discs are included in the packaging.” – B.Nagel (USA)
There is a tripod mount accessory that can be added to the Flip Ultra HD which would attach to any standard size tripod. A silent mode can be achieved for recording when you don’t want any sound and a child safe mode keeps your video for accidental deletions. You can get unlimited sharing with friends and family through emails and cards as well as with the Flip private channels that you can create. Archive and organize your videos plus browse and play them back with the Flip Ultra HD. If you have one of the following video applications you should have no trouble viewing your videos as the Flip Ultra HD is compatible with iTunes, Windows Media Player and Quick Time Player. Some of the specifications of the video include the 16:9 widescreen that has HD 720p at thirty times per second progressive scan. This gets recorded as MP4 files. If you want to watch your video on your HDTV you will need the Standard HDMI cables to use with the mini HDMI connector.
Accessories that you can add to your Flip Ultra HD besides the tripod are a battery pack so that the camcorder can be ready when you are. This alleviates the need for AA batteries that have to be thrown away. This accessory works when the Flip Ultra HD is connected to the USB port of your computer or the power adapter that Flip sells. If you are a scuba diver that wants a video of a dive in no more than thirty feet of water the Flip Video Underwater Case is the must have accessory. If you are thinking of purchasing the Flip Ultra HD online we found it priced at around two hundred dollars. The package included the camcorder, Flip Video Battery Pack, protective case, wrist strap and the Quickstart guide. Accessories for the Flip Ultra HD start around fifteen dollars for the tripod with most of the other accessories costing about twenty five dollars. The exception is the underwater case that runs about fifty dollars, but for a video of your dive it’s worth it.
The cost of the Flip Ultra HD is reasonable and consistent with other camcorders that have similar capabilities. Our review found a price on approximately two hundred dollars which includes the guide book, camcorder, battery pack, strap for your wrist and a protective case. The value that you get from this Flip Ultra HD and its ease of use makes it a great buy.

- “I recently purchased the Flip MinoHD and found it to be an exceptionally useful and powerful device, so when I received my Flip UltraHD I was very excited to give it a whirl. As it turns out, it is both excellent and mediocre. While functionally superior, the Flip UltraHD it has lost lots of “sexy”. Each aspect of the functional capability is superb but the overall design and presentation is subpar when measured against the bar they set with the previous device. The UltraHD feels large and clunky especially when compared to its counterpart. It’s over twice the size and it feels like it! The UltraHD has its USB port on the side instead of the top which is not very laptop-friendly. I solved the problem by just using a USB extension cable, but it’s virtually impossible to plug it into my MacBook Pro, especially with anything else connected. The UltraHD has HDMI out, so I can play video directly to my HDTV in HD or put the video up on my computer monitor using HDMI->DVI. The video quality is awesome: after all, it’s HD. Overall, the UltraHD is very impressive but I would think it was much more impressive if I hadn’t seen the MinoHD first. Aesthetically it has a few issues, but it is a great and very powerful machine!” – M.Clower (CA,USA)
- “I am quite happy I decided to replace my old Mino, functionality and advantages are mostly the same, the camcorder is compact and convenient to take everywhere but the HD quality takes the product to a whole new level. Picture quality is simply stunning when recording in exteriors, the colors are vibrant and the level of detail is quite impressive. One thing I noted though is that lighting is very important when recording, I have made a several videos in interiors and picture quality seems to suffer, it does not look bad, but it doesn’t look as good as videos recorded on exteriors. Battery life is quite good too, I have recorded the complete 2 hours and battery will be left for you to re-watch the videos. Video quality is 1280×720 (16:9) and the videos are recorded in .mp4 format, which for me is better than the .avi from prior models. As I mentioned earlier, the HDMI cable is not included but what I did is that I connected the camcorder directly into my PS3 and that did the trick. Since the file format is .mp4 the PS3 had no issues recognizing the videos. A great camera that I would definitely recommend over the prior models, the price difference is well worth it after you watch what the Ultra HD can do. The Flip camcorder just got better.” – R.Suarez (TX,USA)
