Camcorders used to be high-end gadgets that only people with big pockets can enjoy. Now, virtually all modern digital cameras have basic recording capabilities, which is why so many videos are being shared across the Internet. However, some of the videos recorded have mediocre quality especially during low light situations. Sharing videos can take some time and average users may not even know how to do it. The higher quality digital camcorders may be difficult to handle for some as well. The Flip SlideHD Camcorder shows off a unique design that aims to tackle all of these concerns.

Design

The Flip SlideHD Camcorder boasts one of the most innovative designs to ever hit camcorders. At first glance, it looks like an innocent mp3 player or pocket video recorder that is easy to handle. Recording is fairly simple just like any compact recording device with a large red recording button being surrounded with the zoom controls and play and trash buttons. However, the real fun begins when the Flip SlideHD flips to reveal a nice 3-inch wide touchscreen display.

This display presents a very simple interface showing all of the recorded videos in thumbnails. The display also stands up with the base lying down, making it easy to show to friends on a table. The base also features a slider which can be used to scroll through the videos being stored. The manufacturer describes this as a “shoot and show camcorder”. Once the presentation is finished, the device can immediately slide back in place for more recording to be done. The only real downside to all of this is the overall thickness compared to every other pocket camcorder.

Another trick up its sleeve is the way the camcorder connects to the computer. Rather than using a USB cable, a USB arm is built into the device which can extend whenever a connection is needed. This means that the device can be carried anywhere without any separate attachments to worry about. The only accessories that it comes with are the wrist strap for better control and soft protective case for protection when on the go.

Main Features

The Flip SlideHD Camcorder features 16 GB of internal memory which is enough for four hours of 720p video at 30 fps. In order to record lengthier times, the Space Saver format can be used, tripling the length to 12 hours of video. The H.254 HD 16:9 widescreen support is nice and several other formats can be chosen, including QuickTime Player, iTunes, and Windows Media Player formats.

Other Features

The FlipShare software can be used to take advantage of the Space Saver format to allow longer videos to be recorded. It can also be used to organize, edit videos, and even create custom movies. These videos can then be shared without the need for attachments. Flip Channels are created instead, which serves as a gateway to upload the videos to popular social networking sites like YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace. The FlipShare software is also compatible with Mac OS X operating systems which are a major plus for those that use iMovie and Final Cut Pro.

Unfortunately, the other extra features can only be used if certain accessories are obtained. The Flip SlideHD Camcorder doesn’t come with an HDMI cable, but once the Flip Video HDMI Cable is purchased, videos can be played back with ease on the high definition TVs. A pair of headphones can be plugged in to enjoy the videos in any setting. Charging the video recorder is as easy as plugging it in the USB port of any computer. The only other way to do this is by getting the Flip Video Power Adapter which is sold separately.

Bottom Line

The Flip SlideHD Camcorder has a very interesting concept for recording and showing videos at an instant. The $280 price tag may turn off some people, but it deserves some recognition for adding fun to the recording experience. The video quality is exceptional and what matters most is that the device is extremely easy to pick up. This device should pave the way to future models that may be thinner and just as functional. For now, this device is truly one of a kind.

This FlipVideo Slide HD is a handy piece of work for carrying in your pocket and delivers some pretty good HD video for the most part except for one thing. I have had at least three of the earlier models of the FlipVideos and this is the first one that goes massively magenta when used indoors under tungsten light. It is fine in daylight but goes to a magenta cast that really sucks. I have other video cameras professional quality down to the lower end consumer camera and this is not a complaint about overall quality. It really delivers in natural daylight but it is all over when you find yourself in a situation that features tungsten. Even a little light in say, a restaurant, seems to overwhelm. This device seemed to be amazing when I first heard about it but obviously I had not heard about this. • “I absolutely LOVE the new Flip SlideHD! I’m the owner of many video cameras and digital cameras! I have had a RCA small wonder for YEARS! I loved how it had the flip screen and how compact it was, but the picture wasn’t always the greatest…and I get errors every time I try to upload the videos on my HP computer with Vista. I got this camera as an early Mother’s Day gift and I LOVE IT! It’s still compact…LOVE the slide feature to watch the video! Love the touch screen and that the camera won’t turn on in my camera. I wish it had a flip screen like my RCA, but that’s okay! :) I also have a JVC 40G Everio, but this Flip camera will be so much easier to take with me and still get the quality of an HD camera. I’m also Thankful that it has 4 hours recording time. Much better than the 30 minutes or 1 hour on my other hand held video cameras!
