Canon VIXIA HF S30

They are known for offering many different types of digital cameras to reach out to all audiences. However, the level of quality can never compare to dedicated camcorders which is why Canon has a separate lineup called VIXIA. The Canon VIXIA HF series can record high definition video and save it to flash memory. When it comes to professional quality in a compact package, it is best to go for any models in the consumer S-series and the new Canon VIXIA HF S30 hopes to be the newest addition to the 2011 library of digital camcorders.

Design and Interface

Those that have seen the Canon HF S20 will be very familiar with the S30 as it looks similar. It sports the same widescreen 3.5-inch high resolution touch screen display allowing 922,000 dots to be shown. But one of the major additions to the interface is the electronic viewfinder giving the S30 some professional characteristics. Users can optionally use this 0.27-inch color viewfinder displaying 123,000 dots for more accurate recording. Other controls are similar with the Powered IS button still present as a physical button along with the Display and Video Snap buttons.

Like the S20, the features a switch that can change between the Auto and Manual modes to suit the user’s preferences. Regardless of the mode, the VIXIA HF S30 is very comfortable to use at it uses the same comfortable hand strap that makes VIXIA models great. Switching off the device is easy by pressing the power button on top of the camera. It is near some of the other useful functions like the photo shutter button for taking still images and the zoom toggle function. With these slight changes, the HF S30 still weighs just about the same as its predecessor.

Main Features

The Canon HF S30 still has the same 32 GB internal flash drive so it can store several hours of high definition video. It continues the tradition of having a dual SD slots to allow additional memory to be plugged in but one of the major and exclusive additions to the S-series is the S30′s support for SDXC memory cards. There are already 64 GB SDXC cards out on the market today which are enough to increase S30′s capacity by six times and even greater when higher capacity SDXC cards are released. The Relay Recording technology basically combines the capacities of both card slots if they are used so users can continuously record without risking data loss. Although there are more affordable camcorders that have higher capacities, flash memory does not contain moving parts which increases the responsiveness and data stability of the camcorder during recording. It also consumes less power which is necessary for longer recording sessions.

The other specifications are the same as the S20 so expect the same 10x zoom ratio as well as the same CMOS sensor which was introduced in the S10. The Dynamic SuperRange Optical image Stabilization feature is great for camcorder users that use telephoto focal lengths. This is where the Powered IS button comes in handy to add stabilization.

The Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor makes a return as well which improves the low light sensitivity while the footage stays sharp even when recording fast motions. Users can optionally use the 24p mode as well. Recording people allows the face recognition technologies to kick in so users do not need to set the scene settings manually.

Other Features

VIXIA HF S30 users can quickly share their recorded videos with others if one of the SD cards has an Eye-Fi SD card. Combined with the Downconverting feature, users can reduce the file size of high definition videos by making them standard definition which allows quicker upload speeds when putting them in video sharing sites. Users can also trim down the lengths of long videos by using the Advanced Video Snapshot feature that summarizes the video in highlight segments complete with background music.

Conclusion

The Canon HF S30 boasts few but significant improvements to people that want extra memory without fleeing to hard drive storages. Some of the color accuracy problems remain but at $100 more than the S20, the HF S30 serves as a fantastic upgrade.
