Canon’s VIXIA lineup of models has been doing rather well in the market because of the company’s approach in rolling out product series to consumers. Many of these models recently saw fresh revisions back in early 2010 making it one of the best times to make the switch from hobbyist video recording to professional video recording. People can go for Canon’s flagship models, Canon’s recently introduced midrange line-up, or Canon’s affordable entry-level ones. To make the choices even more interesting, Canon is offering three variations for each level. In the entry-level family, the Canon VIXIA HF R11 offers a lot of space and packages a basic set of features that first-time camcorder users will enjoy.

Design and Interface

On the outside, the R11 has a similar look to its more feature-rich cousins. The R11 is even easier to handle since there are less internal components making it very lightweight. The comfortable strap on the side adds to the ease of use too. One of the things this new entry-level device sacrifices to keep the cost low is its interface. The 2.7″ display is a widescreen format, but it isn’t touchscreen driven. Fortunately, the menus are still easy to handle thanks to the directional pad found on the left of the screen.

The HF R11 is still well-rounded despite its minimal design elements by offering HDMI, USB, and microphone connectivity. All of these connection ports can be found in the back of the camcorder accompanying the “Record” button. For added protection, the small rubber covers need to be removed to reveal these ports.

Main Features

The R11 features a decent 20x HD video lens that is actually has a higher zooming capability than the recent midrange VIXIA HF M series. Its HD CMOS Image Sensor does cut down at 2.39 megapixels, but that does not stop it from recording in full HD 1080p resolution with good imaging and color performance. The Canon VIXIA HF R11′s main strengths are its enhanced reproduction of blue and purple tones.

The lens gets only some of the credit because the DIGIC DV III Image Processor ensures that the output is the best quality possible. This same processor is used in the higher-end models as well. By utilizing a feature called “Smart Auto”, the processor makes its own enhancements to the video based on the current scene and its surroundings. For added stabilization, the “Dynamic IS” kicks into gear to minimize shaking while the “Instant Auto Focus” boasts very fast focusing so key moments can be captured regardless of the speed.

What separates the R11 from the other two models in its entry-level family is high 32 GB capacity. 32 GB is enough for recording up to 4 hours of high-definition video at 17Mbps or 12 hours of standard LP quality. If that is not enough, an SD card slot is through in so an additional 32 GB card can be inserted. The “Relay Recording” technology ties these two storage components together so recording is not interrupted even if the internal memory runs out of space. Once that happens, the recording continues and stores the other parts of the video in the removable storage.

Other Features

“Smart Auto” is just one of the tricks that the DIGIC DV III Image Processor can do. The other is the “Genuine Canon Face Detection” technology which indexes up to 35 faces even if they are positioned sideways or downward. The proper enhancements are made to these faces to make them more natural while one face can be optionally tracked for indexing purposes.

The “Advanced Video Snapshot” feature is also a worthy addition because of its ability to record short bursts of memorable scenes and combine them to form a nice little movie. It is even better if the 24p Cinema frame mode to emulate the look and feel of a professional film. The 30p Progressive mode is another option for professional recording.

Once recording is complete, these videos can be transferred to the PC via USB connection or uploaded to the web if an Eye-Fi SD card is inserted. Down converting of videos is supported as well.

Bottom Line

The Canon VIXIA HF R11 is priced at $699 which is about $200 cheaper than the midrange M31. Remember that it has a 32 GB internal flash memory so it is a fantastic deal for people that want to record as much as possible with the basic features offered.
